Vitamin Retailer Files for Bankruptcy Protection
Vitamin World on Tuesday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors, confirms the Connecticut Post (Sept. 12, Soule), "with no immediate word on the fate of stores. In a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the New York-based company blamed underperforming stores, above-market rents, and unspecified disruptions in its base of suppliers for its woes. "Vitamin World lists as its largest unsecured creditor The Nature's Bounty Co., a Bohemia, N.Y.-based maker of varying health and nutrition supplements owed $21.5 million," notes the Post. "Vitamin World requested authorization to continue paying employees and vendors, and to honor existing gift cards and other consumer programs."
